The other reason is that when doctors make an error in thinking and reasoning about a patient’s diagnosis, the consequences can be serious. I’d like to share some of what I’ve learned in this realm with you all because I think it would have been useful to reflect on earlier in my education as we mold our lifelong habits of learning and thinking. On cognitive biases Cognitive biases are â€Å"thinking traps† that can mislead us as we answer questions (whether a question about a patient, in a class discussion, or on a standardized test). A couple examples: Availability bias: We perceive events as more likely when it is easier to recall instances of that phenomena happening, which may not reflect the true probability of that event. Anchoring bias: This describes a human tendency to rely too heavily on one piece of information when making decisions rather than adjusting to account for other aspects of the situation. There are many more, but these are two powerful examples that can trip us up when we are moving swiftly through an exam, thinking automatically based on pattern recognition. If a familiar answer jumps out at us from the multiple-choice options, we may succumb to availability bias. If we see what looks like a right triangle on a geometry problem, we may jump to the Pythagorean theorem before checking if the triangle is drawn to scale—anchoring bias. Suggestions to avoid these errors: (1) Try not to look at answer choices until you have your own idea of an answer formulated in your mind. (2) Practice distinguishing between when you need to think more slowly and critically (i.e., looking at diagrams for a word problem) and when you can think quickly with pattern recognition (i.e., taking a derivative). Evidence-based principles for how we learn and retain information for the long-term Research shows that we retain information the best when we have to make an effort—whether to recall it, verbally explain it to someone else, or apply it to practice problems. Listening to a teacher’s lecture or passively reading yields very low retention (5-10% of information). So, challenge yourself as much as possible to attempt homework without consulting the book or looking up an answer online right away. Explain a new concept to a parent or friend. And, each time we re-learn a concept, we cement the information a little deeper in our minds, so don’t fear those frustrating moments of â€Å"I learned this before but now I’ve forgotten it.† Each time you re-learn, the material will come back quicker and remain accessible a bit longer.* I look forward to helping you think about your thinking and become a more efficient, retentive learner! Aside from the very obvious madness and chaos of the scene, there is also a very stark example of the dream logic displayed in other parts of the story. There is also a sense of the feelings of loneliness. Alice is the only one that seems upset about the unfairness of the situation, especially when she grows back to her full size and everyone turns on her. This shows the separation she has from the other characters in terms of their state of mind. This is also where another aspect of the dream logic comes into play. Alice becomes the center of attention during the trial. And when we wake, we still feel a slight aching sensation, as if the paint still lingers in our memory, like a phantom. It is not quite tangible, but it is still present in our memory. The feelings Alice must have felt, the fear of being alone is more than likely what caused the dream to shift, ultimately leading to her wake up. This ending is not meant to seem like a fight against good and evil, as there technically are no ‘good’ or ‘evil’ characters in Wonderland as there is no morality. There is only logic and the lack of logic. It is the characters that defy logic that are Alice’s opponents. I think both these ages are a bit ridiculous, the one in Denmark is too low, and the one in America is too high, it should be around eighteen. One thing that I don’t like about the U. S is all the crime; I know that crime is starting to escalate here in Denmark, but it’s still much worse in the U.  S. People are walking around with guns on them; children get kidnapped daily, which is the worst when that happens. When a child gets kidnapped, it’s all over the news and media, and this is called an Amber Alert. I tried that when I was in America, it was terrifying, police men everywhere, helicopters, news people reporting live twenty-four seven. Unfortunately they didn’t find the kid alive; they found the kid only a few blocks away from its house. America has a ton of fast food restaurants which of course cause all the really fat people, who can barely walk. Here in Denmark we don’t have that many fast food restaurants, but we have the most famous ones, and we’re acyually not skinny anymore. The History of Candy Canes Almost everyone alive grew up familiar with the hard red-and-white candy with the curved end known as a candy cane, but few people realize just how long this popular treat has been in existence. Believe it or not, the origin of the candy cane actually goes back hundreds of years to a time when candy-makers, both professional and amateur, were making hard sugar sticks as a favorite confection. It was around the beginning of the 17th century that Christians in Europe began to adopt the use of Christmas trees as part of their Christmas celebrations. The  trees were often decorated using foods such as cookies and sometimes sugar-stick candies. The original Christmas tree candy was a straight stick and completely white in color. Cane Shape The first historical reference to the familiar cane shape though goes back to 1670. The choirmaster at the Cologne Cathedral in Germany first bent the sugar-sticks into the shape of canes to represent a shepherds staff. The all-white candy canes were then given out to children during the long-winded nativity services. The clergymens custom of handing out candy canes during Christmas services would eventually spread throughout Europe and later to America. At the time, the canes were still white, but sometimes the candy-makers would add sugar-roses to further decorate the canes. In, 1847, the first historical reference to the candy cane in America appeared when a German immigrant named August Imgard decorated the Christmas tree in his Wooster, Ohio home with candy canes. Stripes About 50 years later, the first red-and-white-striped candy canes appeared. During the Beatles recording career from 1962 to 1970, they would release twenty-two singles (45rpm) in the United Kingdom, and thirty-three in the United States. Their first UK single was Love Me Do/P.S. I Love You, released October 5, 1962, on EMI/Parlophone Records. The first USA single would be Please Please Me/Ask Me Why, which they released on February 25, 1963 on Vee Jay Records. Although the Beatles were big in England, they had not yet caught on in the United States. Following their first USA single, came From Me To You/Thank YouGirl, which was released May 27, 1963 on Vee Jay, followed by She Loves You/I'll Get You on Swan Records. Finally on December 26, 1963, Capitol Records decided to release I Want To Hold Your Hand/I Saw Her Standing There, which went to number 1 on the Billboard Charts on January 18, 1964, and stayed there for seven weeks. As luck would have it, the Beatles first US visit planned for February 1964 with their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show had been booked almost six months earlier. Only by accident did the Beatles I Want To Hold Your Hand happen to be at #1 the same time as their first US visit. One could not have asked for better timing. On January 30, 1964, following the success of I Want To Hold Your Hand, Vee Jay Records re released Please Please Me, only this time with From Me To You as the B-Side. In the United Kingdom, the Beatles released twelve albums (33 rpm/LP's), however released nineteen in the USA. There were several reasons for this. One is that UK albums had fourteen songs, whereby USA had only twelve. The second, and really the most important reason is that Capitol Records decided that they wanted to create their own albums, different from the UK, using titles taken from UK singles and EP (extended play) singles. Such US albums as Meet The Beatles, The Beatles Second Album, Something New, Beatles '65, The Early Beatles, Beatles VI, Help!, and Yesterday and Today, were never issued in the UK in this form.
